For the next two weeks, Waldo will be spending some time away at camp. Not just any camp, though. This is a special “puppy camp” set up by the volunteer puppy raising program at a nearby prison, the Federal Medical Center (FMC) Carswell, in Fort Worth, Texas.
FMC is currently raising five Canine Companions® puppies in their program. For puppies not in the prison program, “puppy camp” offers a wonderful opportunity for the future assistance dogs’ training. Canine Companions puppies get to work with new handlers in a brand-new environment. Due to inmates’ structured schedules, the puppies have plenty of time to perfect commands and learn to maintain focus around distractions.
A Decade of Support
This year, the volunteer puppy raising program at FMC Carswell is celebrating 10 years of working with Canine Companions! We are grateful for their dedication to our mission, both in raising puppies assigned to them and for supporting our local puppy raisers by inviting puppies to come in for the experience.
