Zari’s hometown of Sacramento has been getting a lot of rain over the past few weeks, which makes for too many boring days inside. Her puppy raiser decided it was time for a change of scenery, so they drove west for a day trip to San Francisco, where it the sun was shining strong! A great day to be a tourist! Visiting a big city like San Francisco offers so many unique training and socialization opportunities, perfect for a smart Canine Companions pup!

First, they headed to Crissy Field where they watched other dogs play on the beach while Zari stayed on leash, in a “down” for an extended period of time. She calmly watched and listened to seagulls flying overhead, kites blowing in the wind, and people passing by quickly on scooters and skateboards. Staying focused in distracting environments is very important for a Canine Companions assistance dog, so training and socializing in such situations is important during puppyhood.

After Crissy Field, they ventured over to Fisherman’s Wharf. Zari remained calm and carried on in her “let’s go,” while walking through large crowds of people, including a bunch of rowdy kids who were, of course, thrilled to see an adorable pup. They stopped for a few minutes to enjoy music from street performers playing for those passing by. This was a great opportunity for Zari experience live music for the first time. And in true tourist style, while at the Wharf, they visited the famous sea lions at Pier 39. Zari was very interested, as she’d never encountered another animal that barked, but looked (and smelled!) quite different than her.

After a fun, busy and educational day in the city, Zari napped the whole drive home!
