Independence is a core value of Canine Companions for Independence that resonates with
so many. Perhaps even more so for the men and women who serve so selflessly in our
armed forces to protect and create independence for others.

Veterans can relate to the dedication, the hard work, and the amazing loyalty of our assistance dogs – they are “the best of the best.”

One Team. Two Heroes.

In 2007, Canine Companions created the Wounded Veterans Initiative to provide more assistance dogs to the men and women of the armed forces. With so many service members returning home from combat with physical  disabilities, we wanted to do something to help.

We are proud of our dogs and the Vets they serve, but most importantly we are grateful to the men and women who serve our country. On this Veterans Day and always, we say “Thank you.”

Do you know a veteran with a disability? From Vietnam and Korea to the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts, Canine Companions Wounded Veterans Initiative is ready to help.To learn more about our Veterans and the assistance dogs who have changed their lives, visit our stories page.

  1. That is wonderful Brenda! What a precious gift.. We are also so proud of Heaven II, and her puppy raiser, my grand-daughter, Heather Shimabukuro. We will be as proud of Haleah, when she is placed in 2014. It’s videos like this that make us proud and appreciate the effort we put into raising the puppies. We are truly blessed. Can you see the tear on my cheek?
