Buckeye has started making public appearances in the community, and we couldn’t be more excited to share his adventures! He has mastered his basic commands, has wonderful manners, is good at ignoring distractions and is getting very good at greetings. Of course, as a puppy, there is always more to learn, but Buckeye is doing a great job!

Buckeye made his first NBC4 event debut at the Fire Fighters for Kids Toy Drive. He visited with fans, practiced all of his commands in a new and distracting environment and helped spread holiday cheer in the central Ohio community. Since then, he has also visited with employees at Henry Schein and Cardinal Health, gone to a Christmas tree farm and the grocery store.

Public outings are an important part to a Canine Companions puppy’s learning process. It is vital for each puppy to be exposed to a variety of environments, sights, sounds, smells and people. The more they can experience now, the less exciting things will be in the future and the more comfortable they’ll become.

Not only has Buckeye begun going out into public, but he also has mastered the “bed” command and spends his time in-studio hanging out on his bed without his puppy play pen. He’s growing up!

Canine Companions is excited to be partnering with NBC4 to share Buckeye’s journey to become a Canine Companions assistance dog. Stay tuned over the next year and a half as Buckeye joins the NBC4 team on-air and at events in the community.

To get a daily dose of Buckeye and watch in real-time as he navigates puppyhood, you can follow him on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
