March 23 is National Puppy Day. Here at Canine Companions® we love this day, not only does it give us the opportunity to celebrate our adorable future assistance dogs, but also the volunteers who raise them.
Jill’s favorite puppy raising memory
Puppy raising is an incredible journey full of highs, lows and everything in between. Penguin’s volunteer puppy raiser, Jill, says he has a real knack for making people laugh. One of the most memorable times for Jill and the entire Pittsburgh community was the day Penguin decided the floor was beneath him. “During our weekly interview, out of nowhere, Penguin picks his head up, seeing himself on the camera, stretches out his legs, and takes a big leap onto the sofa where the anchors and I were sitting, all-the-while barking away. I was so stunned I sat frozen in shock. I was just discussing how far Penguin had come and how well-behaved he had been at puppy training class this week. After I recovered and realized I was still on live TV, I couldn’t stop laughing,” shares Jill.
Canine Companions puppies are not supposed to be on furniture, unless invited, but Penguin had other plans for that morning.
Every puppy is unique
It is safe to say there is never a dull moment when raising a Canine Companions puppy. No matter how many puppies one’s raised, each is different and unique. For many puppy raisers, that is part of the excitement that comes with getting to know this puppy. Jill sums up her time with Penguin, “Puppy raising has its laughs, joys and some tears. There is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ puppy raiser because there is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ puppy. Each puppy comes with its own unique set of rewards and quirks. Puppy raisers have to constantly adapt. But, at the end of the day, I know that Penguin is the right size key to unlocking my heart!”
In honor of National Puppy Day, thank you to all of our puppy raisers for opening their hearts and homes to these fun, unique and amazing future assistance dogs!
