As the leader in assistance dog training, we hear all the time from people wanting tips on how to train their pet dog. Canine Companions has a Puppy Training Tips section of our website as a resource,, and you’ll read many of our training tips here at our “Help is a Four-Legged Word” blog.

The first topic: how to know if your puppy is guessing on the command, or if they really have the behavior down. Dogs are very good at picking up predictable patterns of behavior, and once they do they tend to assume things rather than listen closely (don’t we all?). Check out these quick tests to see if your puppy is really listening to you or just guessing.

Canine Companions for Independence is honored to have 1000 volunteers that raise our puppies, preparing them for life as an assistance dog. Weekly obedience classes, socializing the pups out in public, house training…it’s a huge responsibility. And our volunteers do it free of charge to help people with disabilities live more independently. Thank you!

  1. Hello,

I saw you guys at BlogPaws just a few weeks ago in Denver and it was great to hear Pat give the background on CCI and to hear about all the wonderful things you guys are doing. It looks like your blog site is still pretty new, but I wanted to invite your site to join the DogTime Blog Network. We have the largest blog network with over 500 bloggers all dedicated to writing about animals and I think it would be great to have your blog in our network. If you’re interested please email me and I’ll be happy to answer any questions you have and get you live in our network.

  2. Yes, a huge thank you to the volunteer puppy raisers! My daughter received her Skilled Companion in May and life couldn’t be better. I feel like I am witnessing a miracle everyday when I see them together, and find it hard to express in words exactly what all he does for her. Couldn’t be done without all of the wonderful volunteers. Thank you and bless you. 🙂
